A Will is a Protection Product
We all want to do the best for our clients. When it comes to protection, we want to make sure the client has the most comprehensive cover they can afford.
One protection product that is overlooked is – a Will.
How can a Will be a protection product?
Well, let’s think about the objectives of arranging “conventional” protection for your client. The aim is to make sure that the family or dependants are left in the best possible place.
But supposing all that protection is put into place but we don’t round it off by doing a Will. What could happen then?
Let’s imagine your clients are in a second or third relationship. They have children to previous partners. They are not married. They share a home which is in the name of the male partner. He continues to pay the mortgage. He also has savings which he has put aside to provide for his partner. He has life assurance which isn’t in Trust because he just never got round to returning the paperwork.
He is knocked down by the proverbial bus and is no longer with us.
What happens then?
His surviving partner is left high and dry.
Because there was no Will, she has no automatic rights to his estate. Under Scottish Law the house will go to his children
Because his life assurance was not in Trust, the proceeds of that will also pass to his children.
The surviving partner is left with no funds and no house.
In other words, she has been left unprotected.
